The Lab is where we will learn useful fish characteristics. From internal anatomy to coloration and adipose fins, the lab work will provide an opportunity to learn the major fish families and the training necessary to key out what you pull up in the field. Each lab will have a theme provided to you before hand by email. Study the lab handouts and readings before attending the labs and save youself the stress of cramming later. The links below will help you brush up on the families before the tests.

From the Lab to the Sea

We will be spending the first half of the lab sessions in the lab itself, looking at fish anatomy, taxonomy, and identification. The latter half will take us into the diversity of Georgia's waterways - from the mountain streams to the Atlanitc Ocean.

A Theme of Utility

The study of ichthyology requires a good knowledge of taxonomy and morphology to explore the ecology and life-history characteristics of fishes. The lab is where legions of fish biologists first learned the characters which became critical for work in the field. The lab and field fish links are broken down in hierarchical order and will include the major orders and families we will cover this year.
